Law Professor Explains the Texas Abortion Ban | Briefly with Dr. Mary Ziegler

by Thomson Reuters Foundation

A law to ban abortions at six weeks came into effect in Texas on Sept 1.

The law is among a number of "heartbeat" abortion bans enacted in Republican States seeking to prohibit terminations once a fetal heartbeat can be detected, usually at six weeks and often before a woman even realizes she is pregnant.

And across the USA some lawmakers are making moves to overturn a landmark 1970s U.S. Supreme Court ruling that legalized abortion nationwide.

Something pro-choice campaigners have called this an "all-out assault" on abortion rights. Professor of Law Mary Ziegler and author of "Abortion and the Law in America: Roe V. Wade to the Present" speaks to us about the future of Roe v. Wade in America and the new Texan heartbeat ban.
