Nigerian expert criticises those who embezzle funds and invest abroad
Corruption will be defeated in Nigeria only when the country starts punishing corrupt persons, a former World Bank management specialist has said.
“Unpunished corruption deepens corruption,” Ladipo Adamolekun said in Nigeria’s Vanguard newspaper on Tuesday. “When people are made to pay for their offences, it drastically reduces corruption,” he added.
The Nigerian expert also criticised those who embezzle funds and invest abroad.
“We are not condoning corruption but if you are taking the proceeds out, it makes it worse. If they steal and invest in Nigeria, they will create jobs and opportunities for the people,” he said.
Nigeria often ranks among the world’s most corrupt countries in the annual corruption perception index by anti-graft group Transparency International, but the country’s president, Goodluck Jonathan, has promised to fight the problem.
