The Thomson Reuters Foundation is building the capacity of journalists in Côte d’Ivoire and Guinea to produce high-quality coverage of mining and other extractive industries, with the objective of providing better information to citizens and informing policy.
This programme seeks to build the capacity of media in Côte d’Ivoire and Guinea to cover the extractives sectors in these countries. In any country with significant natural resources, effective oversight from media, as well as civil society and citizens, is critical to ensure these resources are managed in a way that benefits the people to whom the resources ultimately belong. The media is in a position to provide the regular flow of accurate information which civil society and citizens can use to demand accountability. Furthermore, credible media reports are used by policymakers themselves to inform their decision making.
The programme will recruit journalists from leading media houses in each country. It will then provide a blend of educational opportunities for these participants, including workshops, mentoring, and meetings bringing together stakeholders from different sectors including civil society, industry, and government. We will organise activities separately in each country before bringing participants together in one cross-border workshop.
The programme will stimulate original stories on the sector, and will encourage participants to base their reports on hard evidence and incorporate the views of multiple actors, including citizens. Running in 2017 and 2018, the programme is funded by German Development Cooperation and implemented in partnership with Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit GmbH (GIZ).
