Vital Aid to Darfur Threatened by Instability

AmeriCares latest donation of medical aid to Darfur will help ease the suffering of families in the war-torn region. Years of ethnic violence, drought and disease have wreaked havoc in the Darfur region of Sudan.  Relief groups serving nearly one million people in Darfur were in danger of running out of critical medicines and supplies. The most recent aid shipment includes medicines and medical supplies to help people suffering from serious infections, malaria, pain and deadly diseases. "As the humanitarian crisis in Sudan rages on, AmeriCares remains committed to savinglives in Darfur," said Christoph Gorder, AmeriCares Senior Vice President of Global Programs. The medical relief also provides clinics serving refugee communities with basic needssuch as infection control items, needles and rehydration supplies. To prevent malnutrition and pregnancy complications, the aid includes vitamins for pregnant moms and young children. The upcoming independence vote for the neighboring region of South Sudan could deepen the Darfur crisis. A referendum will be held in January to determine the future of South Sudan and its quest for independence. The referendum could increase civil tensions could complicate the provision of humanitarian aid for the people of Darfur. AmeriCares began relief efforts for Darfur in 2004, when conflict escalated to mass killingsof civilians and burning of villages.
