TURKEY: SECOND EARTHQUAKE STRIKES

After a second earthquake in just over two weeks struck eastern Turkey, the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) is responding with partners International Blue Crescent (IBC) and GlobalMedic.

The 5.6-magnitude quake toppled buildings, including a six-story hotel and a children’s hospital. Conditions have become increasingly harsh for survivors, as snow falls and temperatures dip below minus 8 degrees Celsius (about 17 degrees Fahrenheit). Read more in UMCOR Notebook.

UMCOR already was working with IBC after the October 23 earthquake, providing food, medicine, blankets, and other emergency needs to survivors, while also considering long-term recovery and rebuilding needs.

With this new emergency, UMCOR also will partner with GlobalMedic to provide winterized tents and a field hospital in Van. Read more.

Your support for International Disaster Response, UMCOR Advance #982450, helps UMCOR respond to both emergency and long-term recovery needs in Turkey. Please earmark your check “Turkey earthquake.”

INDIA & PAKISTAN: FLOOD RELIEF 18

Seasonal monsoon rains have caused severe flooding in India and Pakistan. UMCOR is partnering with GlobalMedic to provide assistance in both countries.

Flooding in Pakistan has affected some 5.4 million people. GlobalMedic is providing clean drinking water in flood-affected areas, specifically Mirpurkas and Sanghar in Sindh province.

Monsoon rains in India have affected 10 million people across five provinces. With UMCOR’s support, GlobalMedic is providing some 3,000 families in 20 villages with clean drinking water for three months while they recover from the floods.

When you give to International Disaster Response, UMCOR Advance #982450, you help UMCOR to support these and other efforts to bring relief when disaster strikes.

US: HEAL PROGRAM IN FLORIDA

After the January 2010 earthquake in Haiti, Haitians living in the United States became the “life source” for earthquake survivors in their home country, providing desperately needed financial and, when possible, material assistance.

UMCOR is partnering with the Florida Annual Conference to support Project HEAL, which helps Haitian immigrants affected by the earthquake access resources so they can successfully assimilate into the Haitian community in Florida for as long as they are here.

This work is a continuation and expansion of that begun by Project HEAL in South Florida, and forms a broad partnership between South Urban Ministries, CROS Ministries of West Palm Beach, JFON/Orlando District, and the Florida Conference Disaster Recovery Ministry.

Your gifts to Haiti Emergency, UMCOR Advance #418235 help Haitians continue to recover from the devastating 2010 earthquake.

GLOBAL: WORLD AIDS DAY

World AIDS Day is December 1. The UNAIDS theme for World AIDS Day is “Getting to Zero,” highlighting the hope that one day there will be no more AIDS-related deaths and no more discrimination against people living with HIV/AIDS.

Commemorate this day by joining the United Methodist Global AIDS Fund and taking the 20/20 pledge to give $20 towards an AIDS-free world. Learn more about the pledge.

Give today to support ministries that fight the spread of HIV/AIDS and help those living with the disease, by giving to The United Methodist Global AIDS Fund, UMCOR Advance #982345.
