Compensation will only be paid where homes have been inundated for more than a week or where flash floods have damaged property

BANGKOK (AlertNet) – Thailand’s flood victims will only get compensation in cases where homes have been inundated for more than a week or where flash floods have damaged properties, The Nation reported.

The government has announced a payment of 5,000 baht ($162) will be made per family. The Nation said officials would only give compensation after checking homes for damage.

Thailand’s worst flooding in half a century has so far killed 533 people and affected 2.4 million.

The floods which began in the north of the country in late July have now reached parts of the capital. Residents in a third of Bangkok’s districts, mostly in the north, have been advised to get out.

The Nation said Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) officials would survey homes before submitting a list of names to a district office.

People applying for compensation need to submit their house registration papers, a copy of their ID card, their lease and other paperwork along with photographs of the damage to their district office, the paper said.

The United Nations says further flooding and mudslides are expected in Thailand with heavy rains forecast for the next few days in the north and north-eastern provinces.
