Indonesian businessman Mohamad El Idris was sentenced to two years in prison on Wednesday for bribing a public official in a scandal that has already brought down a former ruling party treasurer and one of his staff, the Jakarta Post reported.
DGI, El Idris’ employer, won the tender to build an athletes’ village for the upcoming Southeast Asian Games which Indonesia is hosting, but the Jakarta Corruption Court found he had bribed Wafid Muharram, secretary of the Youth and Sports Ministry which commissioned the project, with cheques worth 3.2 billion rupiah ($363,840) to win the bid.
“The defendant has been proven guilty of violating the Anti-Corruption Law,” said presiding judge Suwidya when delivering the verdict on Wednesday.
“We sentence him to two years in prison and order him to pay 200 million Rupiah (US$22,740) in fines or serve another six months.”
Earlier in the day, the same court sentenced Mindo Rosalina Manulang to two and a half years in jail over the scandal. Rosalina had worked for former Democratic Party lawmaker Muhammad Nazaruddin, another suspect in the case.
