Magnitude 6.3 quake off Russian Pacific coast

LONDON, Aug 4 (Reuters) - - A magnitude 6.3 earthquake struck on Thursday in the Pacific Ocean south of Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula, near the Kurile islands claimed by Russia and Japan, the U.S. geological survey reported.

The quake hit at a depth of 49 kilometres (30 miles), the U.S.G.S. said on an Internet site monitored by Reuters in London. There were no immediate reports of damage ashore. (Reporting by Peter Graff; Editing by Sophie Hares)
