The flood victims felt government officials at their resettlement camp had short-changed them

DAKAR (AlertNet) – Twenty-five people made homeless by floods in Nigeria’s commercial capital of Lagos are in prison pending payment of their bail fees after they were accused of trying to set fire to a temporary resettlement camp, the Vanguard newspaper reported on Tuesday.

The flood victims staged a protest on Friday when they felt government officials handling the distribution of government welfare packages at their resettlement camp had short-changed them.

They pleaded not guilty to the charges. They were granted bail for the sum of N250,000 ($1,638).

A deluge at the start of July caused severe flooding that destroyed infrastructure and left hundreds of people homeless in the West African city.
