DAVOS, Switzerland, Jan 27 (Reuters) - The devastating floods in Australia will have a positive long-term impact by making farmland more productive, Trade Minister Craig Emerson said on Thursday.

"We've been through a severe drought for a very long time so we might be in for a pretty good harvest of our winter crop down the track," Emerson told Reuters Insider.

Emerson said Australia, a major exporter of farm produce, believed the way to deal with food price inflation that was exacting a terrible social toll on poor countries was by opening up agricultural markets further to remove supply constraints.
