PORT-AU-PRINCE, Oct 19 (Reuters) - At least 10 people were killed in flooding and mudslides triggered by three days of torrential rains in Haiti, where vulnerable earthquake survivors were living in sprawling tent camps, authorities said on Tuesday.
Director of the Civil Protection Office Alta Jean-Baptiste said three other people were still missing in the floods that struck the capital, Port-au-Prince, and the neighboring town of Carrefour, the epicenter of the devastating Jan. 12 quake.
"According to weather forecasts available, it will continue to rain tonight. So we have launched an alert to call on residents living in areas at risk to take all precautionary measures," Jean-Baptiste told Reuters on Tuesday.
"We have particularly called on people living under the tents to be vigilant because the rain could also be accompanied by gusts of wind," she said.
About half a dozen people were killed recently in similar rainstorms that swept the open-air camps. A magnitude-7 earthquake hit Haiti's capital on Jan. 12, killing as many as 300,000 people and leaving 1.3 million homeless.
