Sept 30 (Reuters) - Slobodan Milosevic was forced out of office a decade ago. Here is a timeline of events in Serbia since he came to power 20 years ago:

Dec. 9, 1990 - Slobodan Milosevic, leading a wave of Serb nationalism, is elected Serbian president in federal Yugoslavia&${esc.hash}39;s first multi-party vote since World War Two.

June 25, 1991 - Croatia and Slovenia proclaim independence from Yugoslavia.

June - Yugoslav tanks fail to crush Slovenian independence. Fighting begins in Croatia between Croats and minority Serbs.

April 6, 1992 - War breaks out between the Muslim-led Bosnian government and local Serbs, who start the siege of capital Sarajevo that lasts until 1995.

Nov. 21, 1995 - Presidents Alija Izetbegovic of Bosnia, Franjo Tudjman of Croatia and Milosevic of Serbia sign Bosnia peace agreement in U.S. city of Dayton.

July 15, 1997 - Milosevic is elected Yugoslav president by the federal parliament and steps down as Serbian president after serving the maximum two terms.

March 24, 1999 - NATO begins bombing Yugoslavia, after peace talks in France over the fate of Kosovo end in failure.

June 10 - Milosevic agrees to withdraw troops from Kosovo and NATO ends bombing.

Sept. 24, 2000 - Milosevic refuses to step down after losing controversial elections for president of Yugoslavia. Vojislav Kostunica, backed by the DOS alliance of 18 parties, claims victory.

Oct. 5 - Tens of thousands of people storm the Belgrade parliament after days of strikes. A day later, Milosevic concedes defeat and Kostunica is sworn in as Yugoslav president.

Nov. 1 - Yugoslavia is accepted back into the United Nations, and says it wants to join the European Union.

April 1, 2001 - In a drama with masked police surrounding his residence, Milosevic is arrested for abuse of power.

June 28 - Milosevic extradited to Hague war crimes tribunal.

Feb. 12, 2002 - Milosevic goes on trial in The Hague.

March 12, 2003 - Serbian Prime Minister Zoran Djindjic is assassinated by a sniper in Belgrade.

Oct. 2005 - EU sets talks on a Stabilisation and Association Agreement (SAA), Belgrade&${esc.hash}39;s first step to membership.

March 11, 2006 - Milosevic found dead in his cell in The Hague.

May 21 - Montenegro votes in a referendum to end an 88-year partnership with Serbia.

Feb. 17, 2008 - Kosovo declares independence. Serbia and Russia vow to block the new state&${esc.hash}39;s entry into the United Nations.

July 21 - Serbia arrests Bosnian Serb wartime political leader Radovan Karadzic.

Dec. 7, 2009 - EU foreign ministers unfreeze an interim trade agreement with Serbia, enabling the accord to take effect, and allowing Serbia to apply for EU candidate status.

Dec. 19 - The EU lifts visa requirements for Serbia, Macedonia and Montenegro. Three days later, President Boris Tadic submits EU membership application.

March 31, 2010 - Serbia&${esc.hash}39;s parliament apologises for the 1995 Srebrenica massacre in which 8,000 Muslim boys and men were killed by Bosnian Serb forces.
